2.7.2004 - The Long (Long) Overdue Jack 2nd Birthday Update!

  • Happy Birthday Jack! I can hardly believe that it's already my lads 2nd birthday this weekend (Sunday 4th of July, his birthday being the most important thing happening that day, we don't celebrate independance day over here in the UK, we're vaguely aware it involves something to do with turkeys). Time sure has flown by and he's shot up, but at the same time I have trouble remembering what it was like before he turned up, you know, like having free time. It's had its ups and its downs, but its all been great fun and given me a perfect excuse to buy all those cool looking new toys that you just couldnt justify to the wife buying for yourself...
  • Crikey, would you believe this update was supposed to go out in February? Me neither, o well :)
  • I've been somewhere beyond the busyness event horizon for the first half of this year what with one thing and the other, and this sites one of the things that have unfortunately been put on the back burner in the "should do soon before people think I've died" pile, so I've finally got around to tidying it up and getting it in some sort of shape for an update.
  • Thanks to everyone for still sending stuff in and keeping me up to date on some things while I've been so busy, I really appreciate it all even if I don't say it all the time, which leads me on to another points...
  • Email woes...
I decided in a fit of peak to update my email client (god knows why as Eudora was working perfectly) to Thunderbird, which was very nice, so I imported all my messages and address book into Thunderbird and got rid of Eudora...
So, I come to update the site which I always do on my laptop. Normal procedure for me was to copy the Eudora dir to the laptop (Eudora keeps *everything* in its own directory), read and update the site from the emails deleting them as I go, so I tried this with Thunderbird, and no, it didn't work, at all, seems it keeps its files randomly scattered around the hard drive and abuses the registry, much screaming and ranting ensues.
So, I decide that I was better off with Eudora and install it again, then I try to import all my stuff back from Thunderbird to Eudora, but noooooo, you cant import from Thunderbird to anything, more screaming and ranting ensues.
So, after some creative emailing I've managed to salvage the lions share of the emails but I've lost some of them, and crushingly also lost the best part of my entire address book, which is a real pain in the arse as I'd amassed a decent collection of contacts over the year.
I've actually cleared my entire backlog with this update, so if something you sent me isn't included it was one of the ones that got lost (Shannon, I know one was yours, with the 10th mix stuff), I'd appreciate it if the usual suspects would touch base just so I can confirm a decent working email address for you all, ta.
  • Its nice to get pretty much up to date with the backlog as it means that I can start doing a couple of things I've wanted to do for some time to the site, nothing groundbreaking, I ditched the whole PHP/SQL idea when it became obvious I couldn't wrap my head around it and seeing as I'm a control freak (thanks for pointing that out OG) I couldn't cope with that ;)
  • Maybe some nice little touch's and some useful stuff to boot will make it into the next update (hopefully anyway), we'll have to see. it shouldn't take as long as this one with any luck, as long as this POS laptop doesn't go downhill anymore. The 3D card doesn't work, the battery is knackered, the screens intermittently on the blink meaning I have to run it through and external monitor, o, and it locks up at seemingly random, good eh? Anyone got one they want to give me? ;)
  • Anyway, on with the update...

    Sega Updates
  • Renamed Next Generation Hardware to Naomi 3 Hardware, just because its using an as yet unknown Imagination Technologies Power VR type setup and it sounds better until it gets a final name, some sort of sword again no doubt :)

    Other Bits...
  • I haven't had much time to play games recently, but when I have I've been playing Project Gotham 2 on the xbox (I'm mad into my racing games), that is, when I manage to get in front of the TV between kids programmes.
Its pretty cool and is sating my racing lust until Gran Turismo 4 comes out (o, and Outrun 2, but that's kinda different) and makes a sedate change of pace from the all out mach 10-turned up to 11-sonic assault-total carnage of F-Zero GX, which I still play until my eyes water and my brain shuts down due to sensory overload.
  • British Telecom suck in so many ways its not even funny, they've just decided to sneakily impose download limits on usage as from the end of the year, so that'll be me migrating then, consider my spleen vented about that one.
  • Jelly, ice cream and birthday cake for me this weekend with my lads 2nd birthday blowout, time to eat enough to make myself sick. Theres nothing quite as terminally sweet and bad for you as party food is there? I mean, if you turned up at one of these things on a diet about thet only thing you'd end up having to eat would be the cocktail sticks.
  • I managed to get hold of a Buzz Lightyear for the lad as well (Toy Story 2 is one of his favorite films, in fact, he's a huge fan of most of the pixar films), and as they say in the films its just a cool toy.
I don't know who's going to be playing with it more at the moment, but I suppose I have to give it up on Sunday, ya boo sucks.
  • O, and I managed to unsuccessfully avoid my 30th birthday, sorry to anyone who knows me as I was being an unbearably miserable pain in the arse on the run up to it.
Its not as bad as I first feared though, it's kinda like waiting for an operation, getting all wound up and thinking the worst in the leadup to it, then waking up and finding its all happened and against all expectations you aren't dead,

    Cheers,

    Toby... (To Infinity!...And Beyond!)

27.2.2004 - Spring (erm, ok, winter) Cleaning...

  • Although there are a few updates here and there that have mainly consisted of the stuff that's been hanging around on my hard-drive for far too long and forgotten about, this update has largely been a spring cleaning effort. There's been loads of behind the scenes updates and other really boring things that no-one but me cares about, but bleh, it's my site and it was untidy, so there :-P
  • OK, this *was* going to be a small spring cleaning update, but I never got round to uploading it and now it's turned into a normal, in fact quite large, update, specially as the delay took it to after the AOU2004, the big Japanese arcade show.
  • Arcade news time!
  • I haven't mentioned it up until now (as its mildly depressing), but as you may be aware Sammy, them of the pachinko machine and mahjong fame (or not, if you live in the western world) have now taken over Sega and control the company, they look to be moving in their own management. The current company line is that Sammy want Sega to concentrate on their arcade division, whether this actually pans out we'll have to see, but concentrating on the arcade market seems like a good thing to me as this is where they've always been strongest in my mind (but I'm biased, sue me ;)
  • Also, if you've been keeping up on current events you'll be aware of Sammy's plan to take over the world as far as arcade games are concerned. Not happy with taking over Sega they have now secured all the intellectual rights for SNK/Playmore's back catalog, giving them an enviable back catalog to plunge into. In addition to this SNK/Playmore have finally decided to ditch the NeoGeo in favor of Sammy's Atomiswave system, and all the new games will be released on this new system instead, 'bout time I say.
  • Anyway, on with the update...

    Sega Updates
  • Added Next Generation Hardware page, and added Virtua Fighter 5 and Sega Rally 3 to it. There isnt any publically hinted name for this new hardware, but it's apparently not based on any current console technology and is a significant advance in technology from currently available arcade hardware.

  • Added Accelerator to the Unknown 80's Prototype Hardware page, thanks to Larry Hastings.

  • Added Beatmania II DX 10th Mix to Bemani PC Based Hardware
Yet again someone argued the hardware doesnt exist, and someone else says it does again. Its staying where it is for the moment as there are 2 upgrade kits available for it, one from 1st/8th Mix to 10th Mix (expensive), and from 9th Mix the 10th Mix (cheap), so there must be a decent difference in the hardware to justify this extra cost (this was the case when the old Bemani Hardware changed from analog to digital) If anyone has any *definate* information, please let me know.

  • I also finally got hold of a copy of ICO the other day for the PS2, what a great atmospheric game, its also like gold dust in the shops (in the UK)
  • O, In case you wondered I didn't go to the ATEI show this year, it decided to snow in the UK on the last 2 days of it (when I was going), and as I live out in the wilderness I couldn't actually get to London as the trains all ground to a halt. I was pretty gutted and didn't get to meet all the people I planned to see while I was there, and missed all the new and interesting toys, bummer :(
  • Anyway, that'll do for this time,

    Cheers,

    Toby...

7.1.2004 - Going Forth (but not multiplying)...

  • Three years, and now onto my forth. You'd have thought that I'd have got bored of it by now, but no, it still holds that certain fascination that it always did. This is in no small part due to the seemingly never ending support that I receive from all sorts of people that submit information, pictures, or even just moral support.
It's come to the point, as much as I can make out, that there isn't much information left scattered around the internet about the older games that I don't have included somewhere in the site, and searching for information to prove/disprove anything I have on the site is usually useless due to the massive amount of plagiarism of my work.
I have become increasingly reliant upon your submissions and the work in MAME and other emulators to obtain screenshots and information of the more obscure or hard to find hardware/games/information than ever, so I'm always grateful for any and all help that comes in through my mail box!
  • This was quite a big 'ol update and actually took me a quite a while to go through and sort all the stuff out, and even then I've still got some stuff to do, but that can wait for later on though ;)
  • This updates special mention goes out to Fausto Car?who seems to have come out of no-where and taken it upon himself to wander around the site correcting stuff, updating stuff I missed or forgot to do and generally being an all round helpful chap, thanks Fausto!
  • Also, thanks for the continued huge support from Guru and Greg Fife, thanks guys, I appreciate it :)
  • You know when you've taken a long time with an update when Guru sends you jpg's of games and before you finish the update RB or someone sends you png's ;)
  • O, and for those of you who keep asking, NO, for the 1000th time, I don't want to do a NeoGeo section, its rubbish, I hate it, go away.
  • Anyways, on with the update...

    Sega Updates

    Other Bits...
  • With the arrival of 2004 comes my impending 30th birthday, this officially sucks. I'll probably get more and more surly as the months go by and be totally unmanageable in May, look out for me breaking people in half on the messageboards that I haunt and sacrificing people at random. Sending me beer and stuff is probably a good way to fend off the feeling of impending doom though.
  • In other news, Christmas, I mean, sheesh, I'm sure I never got as many presents as my lad got this year, if he plays with every one of them for about 5 minutes he'll still not get through them all by next crimbo, we had to put an extension on the bottom of the tree just so they all fit under it, santa seems to be favoring him this year, and I had bugger all under there. Them's, as they say, are the brakes.
  • Outrun 2 got released a couple of weeks back, it's ace, go spend all your money on it when it appears in your local arcade, you won't be disappointed :) (its in the Trocadero in London if you live local)
But dont forget F-Zero AX as well, its almost as good as Outrun 2, which beleive me is praise enough ;)
  • ATEI's at the end of the month, looking forward to that, should hopefully have some piccys and maybe some news from that on the next update!

    Cheers,

Toby... (Getting owned by Gradius IV again...)
